This is the Asus Vivobook S14. This is the best option in Asus's Midrange ultrabook lineup right now. Let's check its pros and cons and see which other laptops are good options in this price range. This has Intel's 8th Gen cpu i5-8265u. There's not a big performance difference between this and its 10th gen version. So it's not necessary to wait until the 10th gen version releases. You get 8 GB ram with this model. 1 TB HDD and 256 GB SSD is the storage config. The loading speeds are really fast because of the SSD. Overall, I haven't felt any lag during day-to-day use. One negative is that it doesn't have a graphics card. This laptop has a really modern design.
You won't usually find Display Bezels this thin in laptops at the price range. This laptop is available in a variety of colour combinations. This is the Gun Metal variant. This doesn't get a Metal construction like its main competition Acer Swift 3. Plastic is used instead. Because of that, I think Swift 3 is a bit better in terms of look and feel. The 'Ergolift' feature in this laptop is usually only seen in Premium laptops. This gives a better position for typing. It also helps cool the laptop better. The typing experience is really good. In fact it's one of the best laptop keyboards I have ever used. I have no complaints about the trackpad either. This has a 14 inch 1080p IPS screen. Even though it's great for casual use, creative professionals can't use this due to bad color accuracy. It's hard to find laptops with color-accurate displays in the price range. Let's look at the port selection.
4 USB Ports, Micro SD Card Reader, HDMI Port and a Headphone jack. The only negative is that it doesn't have an Ethernet port. It would've helped creative professionals if it had a full sized SD-Card reader instead of Micro SD Card reader. The addition of a Fingerprint scanner is a big positive. They've added a webcam even though this has really thin bezels. Webcam quality is also decent. They've added a webcam indicator for people with privacy concerns. The biggest negative of this laptop is its speakers. You should buy a headphone or external speaker if you're planning to buy this laptop. I get about 6-7 hours of battery life in medium usage. This is really good compared to the competition. So who should be buying this laptop? This is not a good option for gamers because of its low powered CPU and lack of a graphics card. Some big games can be played in low settings.
But you can't expect great gaming performance from this. Instead, you should look for gaming laptops in this price segment. Even though gaming laptops have great performance, they lack good portability and battery life. This is not a good option for creative professionals either. This doesn't have enough power to do video editing properly. Even for image editing, due to the lack of a color-accurate display, you'll have to use an external monitor. This laptop's main target is college students and casual users. If you're using this to create documents or browse the internet or media consumption, it's a really good option. Acer Swift 3 is always available at the same price segment. But that has a metal construction and extra graphics card. Other than that both of these laptops have similar specs. Therefore the performance will also be similar. Just check which one is cheaper at the time of buying. If you're interested in buying any of these laptops, I've added links in the description.
